As Convenor of the Cross Party Group on Life Sciences, I was delighted to host the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) in the Scottish Parliament – where they had the opportunity to meet with and chat to MSPs about the important contribution of the industry to Scotland and local communities.
Scotland’s world leading Life Sciences industry is a significant contributor to the Scottish economy – supporting 38,000 jobs, with exports worth more than £3,000 million last year.
The manufacturing of pharmaceuticals is a key element of the Life Sciences sector and North Ayrshire, with 881 people directly employed, has the highest concentration of jobs.
With a proud heritage in life sciences and the highest number of students enrolled in STEM subjects in the UK, Scotland’s sector is poised to go from strength to strength and I look forward to working with ABPI now and in the future to make this a reality.
