Scotland Makes Up Lion's Share of UK Food & Drink Exports

Scottish produce makes up the “lion’s share” of UK food and drink exports, as new figures reveal that Scotch whisky exports were worth £6,200 million in 2022 – 26% of total UK exports that year.

These findings show that Scotland continues to punch well above its weight in terms of contributing to the UK economy – despite being repeatedly short-changed by Westminster.

According to the Scotch Whisky Association, the gross value added (GVA) contribution of whisky in 2022 has increased by 29% since 2018 to £7,100 million. In 2022, it made up 77% of Scotland’s foot and drink exports.

Similarly, Scottish Salmon is the UK’s largest food export, and bring in £611m to the UK economy on a rolling basis.

“I welcome these figures which show that once again Scotland’s whisky, including from Arran’s distilleries, continue to lead the way in UK exports – bringing in an impressive £7,100 million in 2022, despite increased challenges on the sector following the Tory’s botched Brexit deal, and the cost of living crisis.

“These figures underline the potential strength of the Scottish economy in a future Independent Scotland.”
