Visit to Scottish Opera

Having been a regular opera goer for decades now, I greatly enjoyed my visit to Scottish Opera’s Production Studios in Glasgow for a discussion with Alex Reedijk, General Director and Caroline Dooley, Director of Marketing & Communications.

Scottish Opera is Scotland’s national opera company and the largest performing arts organisation in Scotland.

The company employs 180 people, whole time equivalent. These range from musicians to painters to joiners, prop makers, marketing etc.

Discussion topics included the impact of the Scottish Government’s 2025-25 Budget for Scottish Opera, which saw a 3% increase in core funding and the 2025-26 budget would provide a further 4.2% increase, if passed by Parliament this month.

Scottish Opera collaborates with the world’s finest singers and creatives, together with its own orchestra, principal singers and choruses.

The Company tours extensively across Scotland to ensure performances reach as many people as possible.

Past visits of Scottish Opera’s Pop-up Opera Roadshow and Opera Highlights in Cunninghame North have included Largs, West Kilbride, Arran and Glengarnock among others.

The Company’s Education & Outreach programme, which celebrated 50 years in 2021, includes an annual Primary Schools Tour, bringing children the opportunity to perform their own specially commissioned piece alongside professional singers.

They will attend St Mary’s Primary School in Largs on Friday, which, I will attend and am certain will be a hugely enjoyable experience for pupils and staff alike.
